Fluid mosaic model
A description of membrane structure, depicting a cellular membrane as a mosaic of diverse protien molecules embedded in a fluid bilayer made of phospholipid molecules.

Phospholipid
A type of lipid molecule containing the element phosphorus in a hydrophillic 'head', to which are attached two fatty acids that form hydrophobic 'tails'. A bilayer of phospholipids makes up the basic fabric of biological membranes.

Selectively Permiable membrane
Allowing some substances to cross a biological membrane more easily than others, and blocking the passage of some altogether.

Transport protiens
A membrane protien that helps move substances across a cell surface.

Osmosis
The passive transport of water across a selectively permiable membrane.

Diffusion
The tendenct of molecules of any kind to move from where they are more concentrated to where they are less concentrated.

Facilitated diffusion
A process of diffusion in which the molecules diffuse with the assistance of transport proteins.

Active transport
The movement of a substance across a biological membrane against its concentration gradient, aided bt transport protiens and requiring the input of energy.

Passive transport
The diffusion of a substance across a membrane with no energy required.

Hypertonic
A solution with less of a desity of solute

Isotonic
A solution with the same solute concentration as another solution.

Hypotonic
A solution with more solute concentration

Plasmolysis
Hypertonic: The cell loses water and shrivels.

Turgor Pressure
The pressure of the insides of a cell against the cell wall.

Endocytosis
The movement of materials into the cytoplasm of a cell via membranous vesicles or vacuoles

Receptor mediated endocytosis
A process by which cells internalize molecules (endocytosis) into a cell by the inward budding of plasma membrane vesicles containing proteins with receptor sites specific to the molecules being internalized.

Exocytosis
The opposite of endocytosis - materials moving out of a cell.

Phagocytosis
A type of endocytosis where the cell engulfs the material being taken in.

Pinocytosis
A type of endocytosis where he cell takes fluid and dissolved solutes into small membranous vesicles.
